The History of Premier League

The Premier League is the most vigilant team in the world and the most profitable one. It has attracted the best players of the world. Based on the popularity of the Premier League, many of them are under the impression that it started decades back. But it is surprising to know that the Premier League is very new when compared to the other leagues. It was started on the fifteenth of August 1992.

During the 1980’s the English Premier League went through very bad times. Rowdisim was at the peak and stadiums were tumbling. Unfortunately, the Belgium event which took the lives of thirty nine fans at the Heysel Stadium, in the year 1985 gave a huge blow to the Premier League. This event forced Europe to ban all the English teams for five years. Due to this many of the top English players moved to other teams across the world. Especially to La Liga of Spain, and Serie A of Italy.

Towards the 1990’s slowly the English Premier League started showing its power. They won the FIFA World Cup in the year 1990. It was after this that the UEFA which is the governing body of European football that lifted the five year ban that was imposed on the Premier League. The result of this move was Manchester United winning the UEFA cup in the year 1991.

It was the Taylor’s report on the stadium’s safety specification that brought about the restructuring of the stadiums. In order to undertake the restructuring work and rope in top players a lot of money was required. This brought in vexation among the top football clubs. And ten teams were on the verge of leaving the clubs as they wanted to enjoy the benefits coming from the television income.

A seditious step had to be taken to protect the game and English clubs to improve and glorify. The first step taken towards achieving this goal was signing the Founder member’s agreement on the seventeenth of July 1997. The agreement was all about making the right rules to help the English Premier League. This agreement gave the league the freedom to telecast and sponsor its games.

The first divisions of the Football League stepped down on the twentieth of February 1992. After three months the English Premier League was converted to a limited company. The broadcasting rights were given to Sky TV. During those times, paying to watch a match was something new. But with Sky’s excellent marketing techniques and quality football took the English Premier League to its zenith.

Like broadcasting, sponsorship also played an important role in the growth of the Premier League. In the beginning the Premier League constituted of only twenty two clubs. But the league always wanted to reduce the number to twenty so that they can concentrate more on the improvement of the club and the game. This was attained in the year 1994.
One of the top teams of the English Premier League is undoubtedly “Manchester United”.
